My job depends on a clean Bay and Mike has, time and again, proven himself to have the dedication, skill, and perseverance to fight for protecting the Bay and its wetlands. Mike has stepped in to uphold the Critical Area law when County officials failed to do so.  Mike is a proven leader, not a follower.  As a life-long South County resident and waterman, I support Mike for delegate.
Bill Scerbo - Waterman

My friend, MIke Shay, is a candidate for the office of delegate in District 30 B. As a citizen volunteer over many years in south county, he has been involved in numerous community issues.

More than 20 years ago, a 477-acre tract of old farm fields, marsh, forest and wetlands, with extensive bay and creek shorelines in Shady Side, was on the eve of being built out as a residential subdivision. Mike launched an 11th-hour effort to stop the bulldozers.

Citing inadequacy of the local roads, schools and emergency services, and irregularities in the permitting process, he and the opposition that formed around him halted the development. Today that tract is Franklin Point State Park.

Mike and others founded South Arundel Citizens for Responsible Development during the fight to create Franklin Point State Park. About 121 years ago, SACReD began a similar struggle to prevent circumvention of the Critical Area regulations in Churchton.

That effort produced the longest sequence of zoning appeal hearings on record. It culminated this spring with a definitive Critical Area Commission decision that a proposed development project, Turtle Run at Deep Cove, could not go forward.

Anne Arundel County is now in negotiations to purchase the developer’s properties in the Deep Cove Creek watershed, within sight of Franklin Point State Park, for the public recreational use.

Election as a delegate wouldn’t be a new direction for Mike-he has been doing the job all along.

The Capital - Dick Worth “Letter to the Editor” June 9, 2018

Mike Shay is running to represent District 30 B in the Maryland House of Delegates.  Few have worked as hard in our southern Anne Arundel Communities to preserve their beauty and rural way of life.

I met Mike in 1996, when he was fighting to protect 477-acres of undeveloped land on the Chesapeake Bay, in Churchton.   Mike had posted clever signs throughout our neighborhoods encouraging people to attend a public hearing at the local high school.  What was Franklin Point?

I learned it was a tract of forest, dotted with creeks, ponds, home to endangered bird and plant species, and a breeding site for herons, egrets, and eagles.   Its shallow shoreline was a key nursery for fish and crabs, central to the livelihood of our remaining watermen.

Over 200 residents showed up for that hearing, most opposed to the developers’ plan destroy Franklin Point to make hundreds of luxury McMansions.

The hearing and all the advocacy that followed became a roadmap for citizens efforts to protect local resources, and demand participation in state and local decision-making. After a four-year campaign, the state purchased Franklin Point in 1999.

Hundreds of citizens worked tirelessly to make Franklin Point State Park a reality.   Today volunteers are creating trails, a kayak launch and more. I do not believe any of it would have happened without Mike Shay.

I want to see this same energy, creativity and leadership brought to the job of delegate for District 30B. That’s why I’m supporting Mike Shay.
